What is the Most Effective Cardio? What Works for You?

What kind of cardio is best? What is the most effective form of cardio? Is cardio necessary for everyone?

Steady State versus High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is a hot topic in the fitness community. A quick internet search on this topic reveals a confusing sea of opinions and research. How do you know which type is best for you? Team Flexr6 Founder and Coach Ken Ross is here to help you find the best type of cardio to meet your fitness goals.

Before we get started here’s a quick review on cardio:

Steady State is performed at a continuous steady effort or speed.

HIIT or interval training involves short bursts of intense exercise alternating with less intensive recovery periods. This is also known as sprint interval training.

Let’s start by talking general health and weight loss. Should a person do only steady state, only HIIT, or a combination?

Responses to cardio programs are so diverse it is impossible to accurately rate one form more superior to the next. Steady State, LISS (low intensity steady state), HIIT, etc are all effective in their own way. If people are already performing any form of cardio that they really enjoy, then I encourage them to keep doing that. Keeping people mentally happy is the first step to physical change.

What about contest preparation? How does steady state compare to HIIT?

The human body is very adept at overcoming introduced stress. During competition preparation it is important to record your results. We must continue to up the ante in an attempt to burn more calories and reduce body fat. There are a range of factors that will impact what type of cardio a prepping competitor should do, if any.   

How do you determine how much cardio you need on a daily or weekly basis?

This is very much determined by the current state that the individual is in and their end goal in relation to a time frame. Some people respond extremely well and sometimes require it to be reduced, or even eliminated well before their goal date.

Is one type of cardio better than another for overall calorie and fat burn?

Anything that burns calories is efficient. It isn’t so much what happens during a cardio session but, more so what happens after a cardio session. If you start people off on long duration HIIT they are unlikely to complete the session and more unlikely to keep doing the HIIT. Personally, I have found a hybrid form of steady state cardio to have the best effect for me. Using the stairmill I will up the speed in 10 min blocks whilst increasing the overall session duration by one minute per day. This is mentally motivating, achievable and physically effective.

At the end of the day if you are expending more calories than you are consuming, you will drop bodyfat.
