If it Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It!

I’m all about advancement, development, and progression. I embrace the latest technology and am open minded about new training methods.

However, for 100 years of bodybuilding there were only a small core group of compound exercises, complemented by another small core group of isolation exercises. The introduction of machines only mimicked these free weighted compound and isolation exercises.

Some of the greatest female and male physiques of all time were built using these proven free weight exercises and their machine counterparts.

However, in the last 10 years we have seen the number of exercises “invented” doubled, if not tripled. Some of the new machines deserve kudos and I will nominate the belt squat as one of these. But the majority of new training techniques are marketing garbage. These are aimed at influencing young gym goers who are looking for the quick fix and the quick results.

Don’t change for the sake of change. There are 100 years of solid evidence that the original training methods are very effective, as evidenced by the physiques produced. Science & research has not evolved that rapidly to suddenly develop an expansive raft of new effective training techniques.

Is the Business of Others Really Yours?

Of course, it is! Charles Darwin said, “Organisms best adjusted to
their environment are the most successful in surviving and
reproducing.” And no, Darwin doesn’t have 2.5 million YouTube or TikTok
followers. His theory of evolution by natural selection became the foundation of modern evolutionary studies.

Humans become involved in others business as a part of natural selection.
Kill, or be killed. Remove your competition or perish. Subconsciously or
consciously, this is why we meddle, why we are vindictive, why we are envious and why we are an evil species.

But you don’t have to be the caveman that clubbed his brother to death over
a mammoth hindquarter. Be the caveman that marvelled the first time he saw a fire ignited by his brother. Be that caveman who learnt this technique, refined it and showed others. Acknowledge your brother as the first caveman to light a fire.

If you feel the primal urge to be involved in the business of others then
one day, when you least expect it, you will be clubbed over the head.

Misinformation Overload! Are You About to Have a Meltdown?

The only thing these people didn’t have was the internet, so the expansion and reach of their craft was limited and slow. But now this has changed and their expansion and reach are immediate and limitless. And with a growing, naïve, and untapped market these people, and their automated online personas are exponentially exploding. And this is about to get far, far worse now that anyone can access the Artificial Intelligence (AI) range of tools.

If something seems too good to be true, or it goes against the grain of wide held beliefs and scientifically supported evidence over decades or centuries, then it probably is false. Start thinking for yourself again. It’s very refreshing!

  • Sleep – broken or short duration, inadequate bedding
  • Stress – drains you mentally
  • Depression – you tend to want to sleep more during the day
  • Laziness – the less you do, the less you want to do
  • Obesity – your body is not designed to function in this state
  • Exercise – excessive amounts can cause fatigue over the long term

Many of these go hand in hand. In fact, a lot of people will have all these factors in their life. By addressing these one by one in a systematic manner will bring you out of your slumber!

Holidays – The All Round Recharge – Make it Work for You!

Holidays, such as Easter provide many people with a four day break from work. That mental break and recharge is important to most. But, did you take three steps forward and four back? You most likely did!

This team of year also usually coincides with a change in nutrition. Clean eating can slip a little and poor eating can also become poorer. The end result of this can often be mentally damaging. Where your hard work has stalled, or you actually feel far worse than you ever did. This immediately puts you on the back foot with the return to your regular routine.

So did you really recharge, or regress?

Plan your next holiday period. Set goals and stick to them rigidly. For someone who has never done this a good starting point is to make the final day a clean day, with clean eating and plenty of hydration and some mild exercise. This will put you on the front foot mentally for the return to your regular routine.

How Do I create More Hours in a Day? You Train for it!

Say what? Like every other large task you need to achieve in life. Instead of launching straight into it, you need to build into it.

What do all these have in common?

  • You want to drop 10kg, so you go on a crash diet
  • You want to run a marathon, so you attempt it in week 1
  • You want to earn more money, so you take on a second and third job
  • You want to get up an hour earlier every day to walk before work

Failure is the likely outcome. Because you haven’t slowly trained for this. The body and mind cannot handle extreme change over an extended period. As resilient as we are, there are limits.

Break these tasks down into very achievable sub-tasks. And let’s start with the easiest one – the walk before work.

  • Day 1 – get out of bed 10 mins earlier than usual to get your faculties together and to realise that this is easy and I can do more.
  • Day 2 – up 20 mins earlier. Prepare your walking clothing for the next day.
  • Day 3 – up 30 mins earlier. Go for a 20 min walk.
  • Day 4 – up 40 mins earlier. Go for a 30 min walk.

And you know the rest.

This is exactly how you create more hours in a day by training for it. Meanwhile you are also far less likely to fail at you set task as you have built into it!

You Train Hard – But Do You Train Efficiently?

You believe you train hard and that’s great! If you are giving it your all and are totally pumped and exhausted by the end of you workout then you cannot question your commitment. But, are you getting from point A to point B in the quickest possible way?

Efficient training is the best way to train. You won’t be compromising perceived effort or rate of exertion, but you will be assisting optimal muscle growth.

By lowering your weight and really focusing on the muscle group you are training is the most efficient way to train. It reduces the risk of injury and puts your maximum effort into stimulating the target muscle group.

Most people will go to the same commercial gym year after year. Look around you. How many of these people can you say have visually added muscle mass to their frame in the last year, including you? The answer will likely be zero.

If you are one of these people your life is probably stagnant and you are an underachiever who has never amounted to much in life, and never will.

Priorities – Get Yours in Order!

Mine is to optimise full mental and physical functionality for the longest time period possible. What’s yours?

That’s right! Everything I do is to maximise my quality and length of life. As I age I am becoming more attuned every day to what my body needs, and doesn’t need.

Surrounding myself with positive, honest and real people is one of my strengths for mental integrity. In turn, if anyone breaches any of these I will ruthlessly remove them from my life. Tolerance can only last a short infinite time.

Physically, I continue to educate myself and listen to my body. If you have a headache or a stomach ache there is always a reason for that. I am now very adept at identifying the reason and eliminating the cause. I never take painkillers as these only mask the symptoms.

I have adopted these, and many other life extending principles over the last 15 or so years. When I turned 40 the light bulb came on and I put my longevity plan into action. If I hadn’t, you wouldn’t be reading this today!

Being unable to get onstage at INBA PNBA Global events in 2020, and only on four occasions in 2021, enthused me to plan the 2022 Flexr6 World Tour!

In 2022, I will be onstage in 21 separate INBA PNBA Global events in eight different countries. To date, I have been onstage at four of these events.

Furthermore, some clarification around my eligibility for these INBA PNBA Global categories is warranted. As I am a PNBA (Professional) Bodybuilder I am not permitted to enter any bodybuilding category at any amateur event. Hence why I only enter Classic Physique, Ink/Tattoo and Mixed Pairs/Couples at these amateur events. However, if an INBA PNBA Global event offers professional categories I am also eligible to enter all professional bodybuilding divisions.

Constructing your Physique: The five essentials

There are of course many aspects to constructing your physique however, these are the five essentials we will discuss in a chronological sequence.

Genetics

You need to play the cards you’ve been dealt with, right?

Of course, you do. Or do you?

We are all human in appearance and our DNA is consistent within our species. But we all look so different.

Some cultures are more prominent in strength related sports. Strongmen and women are predominantly from the Scandinavian region and the Baltic States. Frozen skeletons from thousands of years ago have been discovered and examined. They have displayed larger than average bone structures indicating these people were just plain big. Their bloodlines have produced the strongmen and women we see today.   

Go to any bodybuilding show and look at the abdominal definition of each competitor. There are six packs, eight packs, four packs, thick, shallow, symmetrical, and off-set abs. They all serve the same purpose for us humans, but some are more appealing to the judges’ eye.

Disillusioned already? Not a chance! You can change your appearance to be far more appealing everyday and onstage. Keep reading.

Mindset

So, you have your cards in your hand. Which ones do you throw back and which ones do you keep? What card or cards are you hoping to receive to have the strongest and winning hand?

You throw some, or all back and you live in hope that you will be touched by an angel and receive the hand from heaven. But you may get the hand from hell.

But I digress….and therein is the lesson. Don’t be distracted by the myriad of tricksters, frauds and dare I say it, card sharks that will attempt to alter your mindset so they can cash in your chips!    

Set your goals, stay on your path, don’t stray from your end state. Block out the external noise, the negative people and leave the soul-destroying job you hate. Surround yourself with positive people, embrace a healthy lifestyle and be amazed how everything you touch from this point on will turn to gold.

I know this, as this is me.   

Nutrition

The fuel and the recovery! The most underrated weapon in your arsenal. Most of the medicines today are synthetic versions derived from nature.  For thousands of years cultures, such as the Chinese have known the secrets of traditional effective remedies and longevity.

Unfortunately, today we are overpowered with non-nutritious, affordable, timely and often harmful food options. Our body is extremely resilient and adaptive to what we put into it, up until a point.

It isn’t just what we eat it is how we are programmed to eat it. In Western society we are told to eat three meals per day, and bread at lunchtime is a tradition. Well guess what? That doesn’t work! Just look at most people in the Western World.  

If you want to construct an efficient machine you must supply it with the right fuel and recovery options using precise timing. I can best describe this as an individual science. There is only one person who knows your body. That person needs to self-educate or source a reputable educator to optimise the building of the ultimate physique.

Knowledge is indeed, power!

Training

You have been training for something since the moment you were born. To breath walk, talk, eat, drink, sleep, cry, laugh, etc. In fact, the list is endless.

We go through life becoming interested and maybe less interested or even disinterested in a range of topics, issues, and endeavours.

Some people are in constant training to be the world champion at having a heart attack. Whilst some others train as hard and as often as they can to contract lung cancer or liver failure. If you do something for long enough you will get good at it!  

Whatever you are training for do it with passion. If you do not absolutely love the training and the result, then you need to change your focus. You may find it all too hard or it may be a mockery and you need a higher challenge.

Consistency

As a species we learn through repetition. The constant imprinting of our brain, positive or negative will work.  

Identify your ideal physique and the steps it requires to attain your Michelangelo or Venus. Follow these steps every single minute of every single day. Live it, breathe it and it will happen.

I have supplied four crucial and malleable overarching key strategies in this document. These can be broken down into steps that can be followed. If you have the fifth; genetics you still need to apply the other four to construct your physique. If you don’t then hell, pretend you do!

Returning to the Gym – What are the Dangers?

As most of the world will be returning to the gym in the near future it is essential that you follow these key strategies to ensure health, progress and longevity.

Returning to the Gym

Start at the Start – what does this mean? Well, it doesn’t mean picking up 1kg dumbbells if you are used to pressing 50kg dumbbells. It must be remembered that your strength levels will be diminished after any prolonged layoff. If you attempt to lift what you did pre COVID-19 you WILL injure yourself. When returning to the gym start at 50% of the weight you previously used. Or for non-weighted training 50% of the reps or duration of time that you previously used.

Don’t Overstimulate – some pre-workouts can make you feel that you are
Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson (the huge dude from Game of Thrones). This sense of invincibility WILL injure you. Use the 50% rule on pre-workouts when returning to the gym.

Dress for the Conditions, Not for Tik Tok! – gyms are COLD. The temperatures are set LOW in gyms. This is so you don’t expire in the first 15 mins of your workout from heat exhaustion. However, this may also compromise your immune system which is a huge NO NO during the Corona Virus Pandemic. Upon returning to the gym, stay warm and only update your social media with pics & videos of good form and impressive weights!

Don’t Start a Riot – adhere to your gyms rules. If you break the newly enforced rules by your gym – they will be shut down again! Remember, your gym owner would love to have every member in its facility 24/7. So
returning to the gym in a responsible manner is essential for your gym to remain open.
